Casements and sashes in Wisborough Green
West of Billingshurst on the A272, in Chichester District
The village
Wisborough Green stands on a plateau above the River Kird, on the A272 between Billingshurst and Petworth. It lies in Chichester District, not Horsham, so planning questions go to Chichester District Council. Around a third of the parish's land is within the National Park boundary of the South Downs.
The conservation area appraisal written for Chichester District Council in 2010 describes a village that grew along an old west to east route. Glass and iron making were important here from about 1300 to 1600, and farming took over once they declined in the early 1600s. The Green is the heart of the village and is still used for cricket in summer.
St Peter's church, listed Grade I, stands on a mound at the eastern entrance. Its nave is eleventh century, its tower, chancel and north aisle thirteenth century, and William Butterfield restored it in 1867. The conservation area holds 46 listed buildings, including the former union workhouse that is now the village hall and the brick base of an early nineteenth-century smock mill.

Windows in Wisborough Green
The appraisal found casements the commonest window, with sashes on some later houses, cast iron lattice windows on a few, including Ivy Cottage, and leaded light casements. Older houses are often sixteenth or seventeenth-century timber frames, later wrapped in brick, local greensand known as winklestone, render or tile hanging.
It named uPVC windows and doors as the main threat to unlisted houses of character and recommended that the council consider an Article 4 direction covering windows and doors facing the road. No such direction appears in what we could check, so confirm with Chichester District Council before ordering.
Depending on the building (listed, conservation area, Article 4), there can be rules on the glass you're allowed and on the exact glazing-bar layout. Check with the council; Billingshurst Windows can help with that process.
The parish's neighbourhood plan, made in July 2016 and now under review, has a village design guide with fourteen character areas.
