Two councils, three conservation areas

Five Oaks, Adversane, Coolham and Codmore Hill are in Horsham District, like Billingshurst. Wisborough Green and Kirdford are in Chichester District, and a slice of Kirdford parish falls inside the National Park.

Adversane, Wisborough Green and Kirdford each have a conservation area with its own appraisal. Five Oaks, Coolham and Codmore Hill do not, though all three have listed houses.

Each village page below sums up its history, its buildings and what that means for windows, with links to the local sources.

Who to ask about planning

For Five Oaks, Adversane, Coolham and Codmore Hill, planning and listed building questions go to Horsham District Council. For Wisborough Green and Kirdford they go to Chichester District Council, except for land within the South Downs National Park, whose own authority decides planning there. A house near a parish edge can fall either side, so check the council for your exact address.

What the villages share

Almost every village here has timber-framed houses from before 1700, later houses of local brick or sandstone, and hung tiles on many first floors. Casements are the traditional window in most of them; the larger houses of the 1700s and 1800s tend to have sashes. That pattern guides window choice in each village, conservation area or not.
